Description
Bodily Harm by Margaret Atwood. McClelland & Stewart, 1981.
An uncommon pre-publication issue released prior to the novel’s official publication on October 3, 1981.

The title page identifies this copy as:
“The New Novel by Margaret Atwood”
“To Be Published October 3, 1981”
“Uncorrected Advance Proof.”
Included is the folded publisher’s letter on McClelland & Stewart Limited letterhead, dated August 14, 1981, introducing the forthcoming novel. The letter opens:
“It is a delight to be able to send you a preview copy of Margaret Atwood’s new novel, Bodily Harm…” and praises Atwood as “the most widely read novelist and the most widely read poet in Canada.” It concludes with Jack McClelland’s signature and accompanies this copy.

The letter is printed on watermarked Earnscliffe Rag Content Canada Line Bond paper, with the watermark visible when held to the light.
Advance proofs such as this were produced in limited numbers for reviewers, booksellers, librarians, and members of the publishing trade prior to publication. Because they were working copies, many were discarded after use, making surviving examples accompanied by the publisher’s letter increasingly difficult to encounter.
