The title page describes the work as A History of New Zealand from the Earliest Times, tracing the political, industrial, and social development of the country through four major historical periods. Particular attention is given to the Industrial Revolution dating from 1870 and the political changes of the 1890s, events that were still recent history when this volume was published.

Illustrated throughout with numerous photographs, engravings, charts, scenic views, and historical images. The volume also includes two frontispiece maps of New Zealand. The abundance of visual material makes this an engaging historical reference as well as an attractive collectible volume.

Tall octavo. xxii, 836 pages, including index.

Bound in original maroon cloth boards with bright gold gilt lettering to both the front board and spine. The cloth retains a rich, deep colour with no fading noted, while the gilt remains crisp and untarnished. A particularly handsome example of this early New Zealand history.

Condition is exceptional for its age. Binding remains sound with no seam splits noted. A remarkably well-preserved copy that presents far better than is typically encountered in books of this vintage.

An attractive first edition for collectors of New Zealand history, colonial history, Pacific studies, and early twentieth-century historical works.
