This undated volume features an attractive decorative binding, with a charming pastoral countryside scene to the front and rear boards and silver-gilt decorative embellishment to the front panel and spine.

A previous owner has inscribed the front free endpaper as a gift, dated 1904, providing a small piece of provenance and establishing that this copy was in use by that date. The book contains 275 pages, complete.

First published in 1847, The Princess is an unusual work in Tennyson’s poetry, combining romance, comedy and questions surrounding women’s education and independence. Tennyson called it a “medley,” and the work moves between its narrative and a series of lyrical poems. Several of these became particularly well known, including “Tears, Idle Tears” and “Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal.”

Alfred Tennyson (1809–1892) was one of the most prominent poets of the Victorian era and served as Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom from 1850 until his death. By the time this little Hurst & Company edition was published around the turn of the 20th century, The Princess had already been part of the literary world for more than half a century.

While the volume is undated, comparable Hurst & Company copies of this 275-page issue are generally dated to around the turn of the 20th century. Copies with this particular decorative binding appear to be uncommon.

A delightful example of the small-format books produced around the turn of the 20th century, and a particularly attractive little edition of Tennyson.
