Allison Company of New York as part of Allison’s Standard Library, this antique single-volume edition of The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins contains 616 pages and features a distinctive maroon cloth binding with a decorative marbled-paper panel to the front board and a gilt top edge.

The title page is missing, preventing the exact publication date of this particular copy from being confirmed; however, the remainder of the book appears complete. The distinctive Allison’s Standard Library device remains visible at the foot of the spine.

 

First published in 1860, The Woman in White became one of Wilkie Collins’s most successful and enduring novels. Originally published in serial form, the story captured Victorian readers with its combination of mystery, suspense, secrets, deception, and Gothic atmosphere.

The novel begins when Walter Hartright encounters a mysterious woman dressed entirely in white on a moonlit London road. His encounter draws him into an increasingly complicated story involving hidden identities, conspiracy, love, and danger.

Often regarded as one of the defining works of the Victorian sensation novel, The Woman in White helped establish Collins as one of the most popular writers of his time. Its intricate plot and multiple narrators continue to make it a widely read and influential work of nineteenth-century fiction.

An antique book with expected signs of age and handling.

There is a separation along the inner hinge between the front pastedown and endpaper, with a similar separation at the rear. Photographs of both areas have been included and also show the attractive decorative endpapers.

The title page is missing, but the remainder of the book appears complete.

The binding shows general wear consistent with age. Please review all photographs carefully, as they form part of the description.

Despite these signs of age, this remains a distinctive and collectible antique edition of one of Wilkie Collins’s most important and enduring works—a novel that helped define the Victorian sensation genre and continues to captivate readers more than a century and a half after its first publication.
