Description
1954 Introduction to Mountaineering by Showell Styles. Published in London by Seeley Service & Co. Ltd. as Beaufort Library, Volume IV, edited by The Duke of Beaufort, K.G.

Written by British mountaineer and author Showell Styles (1908–2005), this illustrated guide introduces the fundamentals of mountaineering, including climbing techniques, rope work, equipment, snow travel, mountain safety, and expedition skills. Black-and-white photographic plates, sketches, and instructional diagrams appear throughout the text.

This copy includes two pieces of period mountaineering ephemera that remained tucked within the book when acquired. The first is a three-page illustrated reference titled Knots Useful in Mountaincraft, covering a variety of climbing knots and basic belay techniques. The second is a folded Snow Safety Guide issued by the Mt. Baker National Forest, U.S. Department of Agriculture, discussing ski touring, avalanche conditions, avalanche terrain, rescue procedures, and safe travel in winter mountain environments. Both pieces complement the subject of the book and offer an interesting glimpse into its practical use by a previous owner.
