There is a real charm to this volume — not only in the illustrations and maps, but in the way Hawaii was being presented to readers during a period of enormous historical transition. Hawaii had only recently become a United States territory in 1898, so books like this were part of introducing Hawaiian history, geography, and culture to mainland readers in the early 1900s.

Charlotte Alexander came from a family deeply connected to Hawaiian history and education. Her husband, William DeWitt Alexander, was an educator, historian, linguist, and surveyor in the Kingdom and later Territory of Hawaii, known for his historical and geographical works on the islands.

This copy remains structurally sound, with all pages secure and no seam splits. There is a small tear near the bottom of page 16 (shown in the gallery photographs). A collectible and increasingly scarce early work on Hawaiian history, especially appealing for its period illustrations and maps.
