Description
1912 The Story of Hawaii by Charlotte Alexander
Published by the American Book Company.
An early twentieth-century history of Hawaii, illustrated throughout with black and white sketches and photographs, and including several colour maps. The book contains 272 pages plus appendix.

There is a real charm to this volume — not only in the illustrations and maps, but in the way Hawaii was being presented to readers during a period of enormous historical transition. Hawaii had only recently become a United States territory in 1898, so books like this were part of introducing Hawaiian history, geography, and culture to mainland readers in the early 1900s.

Charlotte Alexander came from a family deeply connected to Hawaiian history and education. Her husband, William DeWitt Alexander, was an educator, historian, linguist, and surveyor in the Kingdom and later Territory of Hawaii, known for his historical and geographical works on the islands.
