Ursula Lewis’s Chart Your Own Horoscope: For Beginner and Professional is a 1978 Grosset & Dunlap edition offering a practical introduction to the construction and interpretation of astrological charts.
This oversized softcover contains 192 pages, including an index, with numerous charts, tables, diagrams and figure captions throughout. The book covers the planets in the signs and houses, positive and negative planetary influences, Mercury and the Sun, Mars and Venus, relationships between planets, and the importance of interpreting a birth chart as a whole rather than as a collection of separate pieces. It also includes information on less conventional astrological systems and more than 90 tables and illustrations intended to help the reader learn to construct and interpret horoscopes.
The book’s back cover describes it as a handbook suitable for both beginners and professional astrologers, and notes Lewis’s involvement with the Professional Astrologers Incorporated of California, the American Federation of Astrologers, and the International Society for Astrological Research. She also taught and lectured in astrology, numerology and tarot.
What makes this particular copy especially interesting, however, is what a previous owner left behind.
Inside are three signed and dated artistic sketches from 1979 — two portraits and one more abstract drawing. Created only a year after this edition was published, they offer a small glimpse into the life of someone who owned and used the book at the time. These drawings have been retained with the book and are included in the gallery photographs.
