1967 Signed First Edition — Son of Raven, Son of Deer: Fables of the Tse-shaht People by George Clutesi with ephemera
Published by Gray’s Publishing Ltd, this first edition is signed by George Clutesi (1905–1988), Nuu-chah-nulth artist, writer, and cultural advocate. Clutesi was the first Indigenous person in Canada to receive the Order of Canada (1971) and is remembered not only for his writing, but also for his painting, stage plays, and role in preserving and sharing Nuu-chah-nulth traditions. The book is beautifully illustrated throughout by the author and remains free of any seam splits.

Son of Raven, Son of Deer retells traditional Nuu-chah-nulth stories, with Raven, Deer, and other figures at the heart. These fables reflect the humour, wisdom, and values of Clutesi’s community, and this work stands among the earliest published by an Indigenous author in Canada.

This copy is made all the more special by the substantial collection of ephemera tucked inside, including:
-

-
