A charming pair of vintage wildflower guides published by Whitman Publishing Company in 1945.

This lot includes:

• Woodland Flowers: A Guide Book in Illustrated Color

Written by noted horticulturist T.H. Everett and illustrated in full color by Rudolf Freund, these companion volumes were created as portable field guides for nature lovers and amateur botanists. Their distinctive landscape-format design and compact size made them easy to slip into a pocket while exploring meadows, forests, and trails.

Each volume contains numerous full-color botanical illustrations accompanied by descriptions intended to aid in flower identification. The books also feature attractive illustrated endpapers that add to their vintage appeal.

These guides were part of Whitman’s popular mid-century flower series, which included companion volumes devoted to field, woodland, and garden flowers. Today they remain appealing collectibles for natural history enthusiasts, wildflower lovers, gardeners, and collectors of vintage field guides.

Condition

Field Flowers shows the heavier wear of the two volumes. There is damage to the lower spine and adjoining rear board, with what appears to be old chewing damage. Corner wear and bumping are present. Please review photographs carefully.

Woodland Flowers is in better condition overall, showing general shelf wear consistent with age.

Both books remain solid examples of these increasingly uncommon Whitman wildflower guides.
