A signed first edition of Son of Raven, Son of Deer, paired with a first edition of Potlatch—two landmark works by Tseshaht elder George Clutesi, both beautifully illustrated by the author and published by Gray’s Publishing Ltd of Sidney, B.C.

🔸 Son of Raven, Son of Deer: Fables of the Tse-shaht People (1967) — Signed by George Clutesi

This powerful collection retells traditional Nuu-chah-nulth stories passed down through generations. With Raven, Deer, and other figures at the heart, the fables offer insight into the values, humour, and wisdom of Clutesi’s community. Told with clarity and reverence, this was among the earliest published works by an Indigenous author in Canada. Signed by Clutesi on the front free endpaper. The same page has a previous owner’s name written lightly in pencil. There is slight bumping to the corners (see images), but all pages are clean and securely bound.

🔸 Potlatch (1969)

A companion volume exploring the enduring cultural importance of ceremony, tradition, and kinship. Blending narrative with reflection, Potlatch preserves the teachings that survived residential schools and assimilation policies, offering readers a rare and personal perspective on Indigenous strength and continuity. This copy retains its original dust jacket, protected with a cellophane wrap. The book itself is clean, with minimal wear to the corners and no seam splits.

Includes two pieces of ephemera tucked inside:
