Ernest Henry Wilson (1876–1930) was among the most celebrated plant collectors of the early 20th century. Employed by Harvard University’s Arnold Arboretum, Wilson embarked on numerous expeditions across Asia, Africa, Australia, and the tropics in search of rare and undiscovered species. Over his career, he introduced approximately 2,000 Asian plant species to Western horticulture—many of which transformed botanical gardens and private collections worldwide.
Plant Hunting, Volume I serves as Wilson’s autobiographical record of those journeys, blending scientific observation with personal reflection and accounts of the landscapes and cultures he encountered. This volume captures both the spirit of exploration that defined his work and the historical context of plant collecting during the golden age of botanical discovery.
Wilson later became Keeper of the Arnold Arboretum and remained deeply influential in the study of horticulture until his passing in 1930.
