Published by Hodder & Stoughton in 1925, this first edition presents Francis Turner Palgrave’s celebrated anthology of English poetry with illustrations by Eleanor Fortescue Brickdale, one of the notable artists associated with the later Pre-Raphaelite tradition.
The Golden Treasury was originally published in 1861 and became one of the most influential poetry anthologies in the English language. Palgrave’s selections, made with the guidance and assistance of Alfred, Lord Tennyson, played an important role in shaping the literary canon for generations of readers. By the Second World War, more than half a million copies of the anthology had circulated.
Brickdale’s illustrations bring a very different visual dimension to the familiar collection of poetry. A highly accomplished painter, illustrator and designer, she worked in the Pre-Raphaelite style and was particularly known for her historical and literary subjects. She became the first woman member of the Institute of Painters in Oils in 1902 and illustrated a number of important works of literature, including poetry by Alfred, Lord Tennyson.
This edition is bound in the publisher’s yellow cloth, with black lettering and decorative black and blue designs. It was issued with twelve colour plates by Brickdale, mounted onto grey art paper and protected by captioned tissue guards.
This particular copy has two of the colour plates removed, including the plate adjacent to the title page. The corresponding grey mounting sheets remain present. Several of the remaining tissue guards have also been torn partially. Otherwise, all pages are present and generally clean, with a previous owner’s name to the front free endpaper.
Also included is a distinctive black leather Folio Society bookmark, featuring gilt lettering and an Egyptian-inspired design depicting an archer to the front, with plain leather to the reverse.
