Description
A Pocket Guide to the Trees and Shrubs of British Columbia
by B.G. Griffith
Published by the British Columbia Forest Branch, Victoria, 1937
69 pages

This scarce 1937 field guide by Braham Grey Griffith offers a concise yet informative overview of British Columbia’s native trees and shrubs. Published by the British Columbia Forest Branch, it served as a practical resource for forestry professionals and naturalists of the time. The guide’s historical significance is underscored by its limited availability; copies are primarily found in non-circulating library collections, making this edition particularly rare and difficult to acquire.

Notably, this publication predates and likely influenced later comprehensive works, such as T. Christopher Brayshaw’s Trees and Shrubs of British Columbia (1996), and provides insight into the province’s early botanical and forestry education.
Bound in black rexine covers with silver gilt lettering. Some scuffing is present (see images for details), but all pages are clean, secure, and intact. Inside is a printed note stating that “additional copies of this publication are obtainable on application to the Chief Forester, Victoria, BC,” with a price of 30 cents for the paper cover and 50 cents for the rexine edition—this copy being the latter.
