I’m creating a new hand-carved Elder Futhark rune set in polished rainbow labradorite. The Elder Futhark is divided into three Aetts. ✨ For this set, I decided each of the Three Ætts will be coloured in one of the sacred colours: red, green, and blue.
🔴 Frey’s Ætt (Red)
The runes of Frey’s Ætt speak to the essentials of life on Earth — what is needed for survival, for experiencing and interacting with other humans and the divine, and for living a fulfilling life.
🟢 Hagal’s Ætt (Green)
The runes of Hagal’s Ætt reflect the unavoidable aspects of existence — disruption, change, stalled progress, and the sudden turns of unexpected luck.
🔵 Tyr’s Ætt (Blue)
The runes of Tyr’s Ætt connect us to the interplay between the visible and invisible realms, with runes tied to the ancient deities, natural forces, and humanity itself.
The choice of colours for each Ætt is more than just aesthetic. 🔴🟢🔵
Red, green, and blue as a triad of sacred colours appear across old European cosmologies. They were not limited to Norse practice, but show up in wider Germanic paganism and even other Indo-European traditions.
- Red connects with blood, vitality, sacrifice, and power. In Norse myth, it is tied to life force and offerings.
- Green is linked to growth, fertility, and the earth — and can be seen as the ever-living green of Yggdrasil, the World Tree.
- Blue reflects the sky, the sea, and mystery — evoking Odin’s blue cloak or the deep unknown waters.
Some scholars suggest these colours symbolise the three realms — sky, earth, and underworld. While no single Norse text lays this out explicitly, archaeological finds and folk traditions point to these colours holding ritual importance throughout the Germanic world, not just in Scandinavia.
By honouring these colours, this rune set is meant to reflect both the earthly and the divine. Labradorite, with its shifting rainbow light, feels like the perfect stone to hold this kind of energy — mystical, grounding, and alive with movement.
I haven’t started carving yet — I just wanted to share these beautiful stones and my thought process before beginning the work. 🌿
